Destino Ortegal

Cape Ortegal

The most northern point of the Iberian Peninsula according to popular tradition. Cliffs over 600 meters plunging into an unforgiving sea. A place where the wind always has something to say.

Between Cedeira and Cariño30-45 min

Cabo Ortegal is one of the must-see places in northern Galicia. Its lighthouse, cliffs and rock formations rising from the sea create one of the most iconic views in the Ortegal area.

Best time of day

The best time to visit Cape Ortegal is at sunset, when the light hits the sea and brings out the shapes of the cliffs. It's also when the place feels most alive. If you'd rather have it quieter, mornings are usually a better choice. Bear in mind this is a very exposed area, with wind present throughout the day.

The essentials

Don't leave without stepping up to the viewpoint by the lighthouse and looking out at **Os Aguillóns**, the dramatic rock formations rising from the sea in front of the cape. They are one of the defining elements of this landscape. Take a moment to notice the shape of the relief and the rocks underfoot: you're standing on one of the most significant geological points of the **Cape Ortegal Geopark**, where some of the oldest rocks of the Iberian Peninsula come to the surface. If you have time, it's worth walking a few minutes along the nearby paths. As often happens in Ortegal, stepping just a little away from the main spot opens up views that are equally striking, and far quieter.
