Estaca de Bares: What to See, How to Get There & Travel Tips

A practical guide to visiting Estaca de Bares, the northernmost point of mainland Spain, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Cantabrian Sea.

Estaca de Bares is one of those places where you feel as if you've reached the edge of the map. Here the Atlantic Ocean and the Cantabrian Sea meet, creating an open, wild landscape that feels different from the rest of the Galician coast. The main feature is the lighthouse, set on a small peninsula surrounded by open sea and cliffs. From this point the views are fully panoramic, and there's a constant sense of standing at the edge of the country. Very close by is **Porto de Bares**, a small sheltered inlet that contrasts sharply with the exposed cape. When the sea is calm, the water turns turquoise and the pale sand creates an image you wouldn't expect this far north. This contrast between wild headland and sheltered cove is one of the keys to understanding the place.

Best time of day

Estaca de Bares works especially well as a midday stop, when the high light makes the open views shine and — if the weather allows — you can head down to the harbour. Sunset is also beautiful, but the most rewarding moment is when the whole landscape is fully lit.

The essentials

Don't leave without walking out to the **Estaca de Bares lighthouse**, one of the most iconic points in northern Spain. Spend a few minutes at **Porto de Bares** too, where the landscape changes completely: calmer water, paler colours and a much more enclosed feel. If you have time, small detours and footpaths let you explore the area further. One of the less obvious spots is **O Semáforo de Bares**, a former coastal lookout post with extraordinary views that most visitors miss.

How to visit Estaca de Bares as part of a route?

For us, Estaca de Bares fits naturally as a mid-route stop within a wider day through northern Ortegal. It's the right place to pause, take in the landscape calmly and — if time allows — extend the stop towards the harbour.

**Circular route: Río Sor, Bares & Loiba Cliffs** Río Sor → Estaca de Bares → Porto de Bares → Loiba Cliffs → return **Practical info:** Location: Mañón (A Coruña). Duration: Medium stop (30–60 min, easy to extend). Conditions: Very exposed to wind. Recommended: Lighthouse, Porto de Bares and viewpoints. Parking: Generous, including space for campervans. **How to get there:** The best option is to drive along the AC-862 to O Barqueiro, then take the AC-100 towards A Vila de Bares to visit the harbour, and follow the signs to the lighthouse from there.
