O Barqueiro: What to See, How to Get There & Travel Tips

A practical guide to visiting O Barqueiro, a small fishing village where the estuary, the harbour and everyday local life blend together with no fuss.

45-60 minBetween Ortigueira and O VicedoParking at the harbour
O Barqueiro doesn't appear on the big lists, but once you arrive you quickly understand why it's worth a stop. The village opens onto the Sor estuary, creating a particular landscape where the sea slips inland with no urgency. The harbour, the houses by the water and the calm rhythm make it a very pleasant place to pause. There are no major monuments or obvious "wow" points here. What's interesting is the whole: walking around, following the harbour and watching daily life go by. Very close is also **Arealonga Beach** (already in O Vicedo), one of the most beautiful open beaches in the area.

Best time of day

O Barqueiro works well at any time, but especially at midday or in the afternoon, when the village has more life. It's the perfect place for an unhurried stop, a short walk and to soak up the atmosphere.

The essentials

Don't leave without walking through the harbour and along the estuary, the real heart of the village. Stop at the **Iron Bridge**, one of the most distinctive features of O Barqueiro. It was designed in the late 19th century to connect the regions of Viveiro and Ortigueira, since this was one of the few estuaries in Galicia still crossed by boat. Today it's pedestrianised and lets you walk from the province of A Coruña to Lugo in just a few steps. If you have time, head out to **Arealonga Beach**, a wide, open beach that rounds off the visit perfectly.
