San Andrés de Teixido: What to See, How to Get There & Travel Tips

A practical guide to visiting San Andrés de Teixido, one of the most unique and symbolic places in Galicia, set between the cliffs of the Serra da Capelada.

San Andrés de Teixido is far more than a small village: it's a place layered with history, tradition and symbolism. Set deep in the Serra da Capelada, between some of the highest cliffs in continental Europe, it brings together religious heritage, landscape and folk culture. The site is formed by the sanctuary of San Andrés, several traditional houses, small shops and bars — all set in a spectacular natural setting with direct views over the Atlantic. This is one of the oldest pilgrimage destinations in Galicia. A well-known saying captures it: *"A San Andrés de Teixido vai de morto quen non foi de vivo"* (whoever doesn't visit San Andrés alive must go after death), reflecting the cultural and spiritual weight of the place. San Andrés de Teixido is also linked to the **Camiño do Mar**, a coastal variant of the Northern Way to Santiago de Compostela. The route starts in Ribadeo and runs along the coast of A Mariña Lucense before entering Ortegal through Mañón — historically the path taken by pilgrims who arrived by sea. The visit itself is simple: you can park at the entrance to the village and walk through its streets, the sanctuary and the nearby paths.

Best time of day

San Andrés de Teixido has a special charm in the early morning or late afternoon, when there are fewer people and the surroundings feel calmer. On clear days, the views over the cliffs are spectacular. On misty days or with low clouds, the atmosphere becomes more mystical — something that fits perfectly with the identity of the place.

The essentials

Don't leave without visiting the sanctuary of San Andrés, the heart of the site. It's a simple building, but rich in symbolic meaning. Very close to the sanctuary is the **Fonte do Santo**, a small spring tied to local tradition. Visitors often drop a piece of bread or a small object into the water: according to tradition, if it floats, it's a sign of good luck. Look out also for the small traditional charms made of breadcrumb (*sanandresiños*) — shaped like fish, hands or ladders — which are part of the local culture. Another key step is walking to the viewpoints around the village, which reveal the sheer scale of the cliffs of the Serra da Capelada.
