Viveiro: What to See, How to Get There & Travel Tips

A practical guide to visiting Viveiro, one of the most charming towns on the northern coast of Galicia, where the historic centre, the sea and the estuary blend into a single landscape.

Viveiro is the kind of place where you naturally slow down. Unlike the wilder points on this coast, here it's the town itself that takes centre stage: streets, squares, arcades and a constant relationship with the estuary. The historic centre still preserves several of its medieval gates, including the **Porta de Carlos V**, along with churches, convents and buildings with deep history. One of its main pleasures is simply wandering through the centre, crossing the Landro River and walking around the harbour, where local life remains very much alive. Just a few minutes from the centre lies **Praia de Covas**, one of the widest and most accessible beaches in the area — perfect for combining a town visit with the sea.

Best time of day

Viveiro works well at almost any time, but especially in the morning or late afternoon. If you're after atmosphere, midday and lunchtime are very lively. If you'd rather have it quieter, go early or take a stroll at sunset.

The essentials

Don't leave without crossing the **Misericordia Bridge**, one of the most iconic entries into Viveiro, leading directly to the Porta de Carlos V and the historic centre. Once inside, stop by the **Church of San Francisco**, one of the most representative historic buildings. If you want to extend the visit, about 6 km away you'll find **Souto da Retorta (Chavín)**, a spectacular forest included in the Galician Network of Protected Spaces. And about 8 km away is **Pozo da Ferida**, with two striking waterfalls: the Salto do Can and the Pozo da Ferida, with a drop of around 30 metres. To close the day, climb up to the **San Roque viewpoint at sunset**. The views over the estuary, the town and the coast are among the finest in the whole area.

How to visit Viveiro as part of a route?

For us, Viveiro fits as a longer stop within a route through the north — ideal for eating, walking and changing pace after more exposed places like cliffs or viewpoints. It's one of the best spots to bring an urban break into the route.
