Ortigueira: What to See, How to Get There & Travel Tips

A practical guide to visiting Ortigueira, a town with history opening onto the estuary, where the landscape softens and the pace invites you to slow down.

Ortigueira is the kind of place you enjoy slowly, without rushing. Its history shows in several buildings around the centre, set against a very local, everyday atmosphere. One of its best spots is the **Malecón Promenade**, which runs along the estuary and forms the spine of the town. Here you'll find a well-kept green area with araucarias, palms and California cypresses — some over 6 metres in girth — alongside a children's playground. This area concentrates much of the town's life: the weekly market takes place here on Thursdays, and it's also where the main stage is set up for the **Festival Internacional do Mundo Celta**, the international Celtic music festival. The promenade continues along the water, with open views over the estuary and its marshlands — a much softer, calmer landscape than the open coast nearby.

Best time of day

Ortigueira works especially well in the middle of the day, when the promenade and the town are at their liveliest. The afternoon is also a great option for a quiet walk along the estuary.

The essentials

Don't leave without walking the **Malecón Promenade**, the heart of the town and the best place to understand its relationship with the estuary. From the end of the promenade starts the **Sendero Azul** (Blue Trail), a path that follows the estuary all the way to **Praia de Morouzos**, one of the most important natural areas around here. Another striking spot is the **Senra tidal mill**, set within the wetlands, where you can see how landscape and human activity have been connected for centuries. The **Municipal Cemetery** is also worth visiting — recognised among the most interesting in Spain for its artistic value, heritage and setting with views.
