Double room

La Vaca

The old cowshed, now at garden level.

This was where Alexo's cow was kept. In old village houses the animals lived on the ground floor on purpose: their warmth rose and took the chill off the home — the central heating of its day. Today La Vaca is a double room at garden level, all stone and timber, with a private bathroom and a window onto the green. Look out of it and, among the plants, you'll spot a pía: a hollowed stone basin we've kept in the garden. The neighbours told us these shallow basins were once used to crush toxo — Galician gorse, with its yellow flower — to bed down the stables. The house, you see, hasn't forgotten where it comes from.

The pía in the garden changes job with the seasons — sometimes a fountain, sometimes a little lettuce patch. 🥬
